One time when I had to adapt my approach to achieve a desired outcome was during a research project on wildlife populations in a national park. Initially, we planned to use camera traps to collect data on the presence and abundance of various species. However, due to technical difficulties with the camera traps, we had to quickly come up with an alternative approach. We decided to conduct a survey using transects and direct observations instead. This required us to adjust our study design and sampling methods on the fly. Despite the unexpected change, we were able to successfully collect data on wildlife populations and analyze the results to inform park management decisions.

I can think of a recent example where I had to adapt my approach to achieve a desired outcome while working on a resource management project. We were tasked with assessing the water quality of a local river and designing a plan to mitigate pollution sources. Initially, we planned to take water samples at specific locations along the river and analyze them in the lab. However, heavy rainfall made the river water too muddy and turbid to obtain accurate samples. To overcome this challenge, I proposed using a portable water quality sensor that could provide real-time measurements in the field. First, I collaborated with local experts in water management to explore water conservation techniques that could be applied to the restoration site. We implemented measures such as rainwater harvesting and drip irrigation to ensure the trees received sufficient water in the dry conditions. Second, I reached out to the community and engaged volunteers in a tree watering and maintenance program, empowering them to take ownership of the project and fostering a sense of stewardship. Lastly, I conducted a thorough analysis of the project timeline and adjusted the monitoring schedule to closely track the trees' progress and make any necessary interventions in a timely manner.
